For the various merchants that I checked, it just says spend twice or thrice to be eligible. So, you could just buy the cheapest item and pay with Amex and you are done. The trouble is that most of these merchants are unknown - perhaps local businesses, not national franchises. Is there any minimum amount of spending required?
