Discover Card: Earn Double Cashback at Amazon.com

We are pleased to inform you that, effective 11/06/11 we will no longer charge a Foreign Currency Fee on any international purchases made with your Discover® card. Additionally, we will no longer charge a Research Fee for any copies of billing statements or receipts that you request.

At this point, this news is unconfirmed. It’s also unclear whether this change would be made for all Discover cards or only a subset of them. If this news turns out to be true, however, it would be a very welcome development, giving travelers yet another credit card option for using overseas.

Where can you use your Discover card internationally?
It should be noted that international acceptance of Discover is more limited than other networks, so you probably won’t be able to use it for all of your travel.

Discover cards are accepted around the world through the Discover Network as well as through partnerships with China Union Pay, JCB and Diners Club International. The list of countries where Discover is currently accepted can be found here.

Discover Drops Foreign Transaction Fees?

The personal payments space has been heating up lately, with Visa announcing its Personal Payments system, Amex rolling out its digital payment and commerce platform called Serve, and MasterCard also forming its plans for its own personal payments offering.

Not to be left behind, Discover has partnered with PayPal to establish its own payments system dubbed Discover Money Messenger. Discover Money Messenger allows Discover Card holders to send money to nearly anyone for free, and earn rewards on the money sent at the same time.

As the person sending the money, you do not need to have a PayPal account. The recipient of the funds, however, does need to have a PayPal account to claim the funds, though they need not be a Discover cardholder.

Sending money is free and the amount is charged to your Discover card account like a purchase that earns rewards. If you’re sending money to friends or family, there are no fees charged to them to accept the money, but if you are sending money to a business, PayPal will assess the business a fee to claim the funds.

There are account limits to how much you can send per day and per month, and not all Discover cardmembers are eligible for the service, though Discover is not explicitly stating what the criteria are for eligibility. Discover does state that some factors which determine your eligibility are temporary, which means that you may be able to use the service in the future even if you aren’t immediately eligible.

Amex, Discover Eliminate Over Limit Fees

• Cash back redemptions, which either are transferred to a bank account or issued as statement credits, will now only start at $50, and must be made in multiples of $50.
• In addition, gift card redemptions will still start at $20 but no longer need to be in multiples of $20.
• Transactions conducted in a foreign currency will begin being charged a 2% fee.
• Perhaps most importantly, the first $3000 of annual spend only earns 0.25% cash back. Spending above $3000 continues to earn 1%.

Discover seems to be following an industry-wide trend, as this move closely follows Chase’s decision to remove the balance transfer fee caps on nearly all of its cards. • Customers who pay their balance in full every month are, as a whole, more satisfied with their credit cards than those who carry a balance and are twice as likely as to remain with their primary credit card issuer.
• Even though those who pay in full every month are most interested in rewards programs, 72 percent of all cardholders participate in some type of reward program.
• Hotel stays are the most satisfying type of reward, followed by cash rewards.
• One quarter of all cardholders don’t know if their card offers them additional benefits and one-third haven’t used any during the past year. Those users have lower satisfaction levels than their better informed counterparts.
